Artist Profile: Wende Berryhill

Wende BerryhillWende Waggoner Berryhill has been drawing and painting since childhood. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. She married her husband, Steve, right out of college, and they began their married life in the Air Force. With an art degree, portfolio in hand, and great ambition for a career in commercial art, their first assignment to Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan did not provide many opportunities for this career path! Wende began painting watercolor scenes of the local area and showed them in art galleries. She also worked with the Officers’ Wives’ Club producing artwork for the OWC magazine. This was a wonderful outlet for her, and it also helped establish her name as an artist.

Wende has always loved the military way of life, the different parts of the country that they lived, the local communities, but mostly the support of the other military wives. She has developed friendships that will last a lifetime. Because the feeling of “home” is so important in the military life of constant relocations, each base carries very significant and personal memories. She decided to develop a series of drawings highlighting each Air Force Base around the world. This is known as The Collection of Bases. Wende strives to capture the feeling of each particular Base with highlights of the base and local area. Her unique style of illustration captures detail and accuracy through the technique of “pointillism,” which creates a subtle variation of lights and darks with thousands of hand-drawn dots. This series is a work in progress! She is continually adding new bases to the collection.

Wende has also had the opportunity to illustrate several poems and verses that highlight the life she has come to enjoy so much. Initially, these prints were individually hand-colored, but because of the increasing demand, the original renderings were painted and then printed as lithographs. This artwork became known as The Calligraphy Collection. It is a unique assortment of calligraphy and original drawings focusing on the love of family, friends, and the enriching experiences of life in the Military. The lithographs are printed in color, and a variety of matting and framing options are available. These make wonderful gifts for military wives and friends.

Berryhill Aviation Art is the largest line of work from the studio. Wende works directly with squadrons, groups, and wings to develop limited edition lithographs. Starting with one squadron in 1984, she went on to create over 150 unique creations that depict the work of different groups and organizations all over the world.

Berryhill Art Studio is now permanently settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where Wende’s husband flies full time for the Alabama Air National Guard. When she is not working in the studio, she is trying to keep up with the active lives of their five children.  Their four daughters and one son range in age from 25 years to 8 years old, so there is rarely a dull moment.

Wende has always enjoyed working with the military community because of their professionalism, great pride in their work and career, and their devotion to family. Her future plans include the expansion of her aviation art to include more aircraft and bases, and also the completion of The Collection of Bases.
